ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses life-course interview data, collected as part of the DISCIT project, and focuses on three major themes relating to the use of accessible technology by people with disabilities. It shows how accessible technology can facilitate Active Citizenship by exploring themes. The first theme explores how information and communication technology (ICT) has influenced aspects of Active Citizenship for interviewees, with a particular focus on autonomy. The second and the third themes show the exploration of the connection between ICT use and assistive technology (AT) use and how Active Citizenship can be limited through both external and internal barriers to accessible technology. The accounts of how people access AT highlighted the barriers to access. The chapter shows whether or not a person with a disability self-identifies or wishes to publically present as a 'person with a disability' can sometimes influence their use of AT.
