ABSTRACT

Chicago became the home of many of the great jazz musicians, who had started playing in New Orleans; so the style known as 'New Orleans jazz' was that developed and recorded in Chicago in the 1920s. Some of the most famous recordings in jazz's history were made in Chicago in 1923 by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. Christened 'King' because of his great trumpet playing in New Orleans, Oliver had moved to Chicago in 1917. He soon proved himself 'King of Chicago' as well and in 1921 formed his own Creole Jazz Band, which opened at the Dreamland Cafe. It was a terrific success and later made a very successful tour of California, showing again the way jazz was spreading all around the USA. In fact, the similarity between his trumpet and vocal style shows how jazz musicians use their instruments in imitation of the human voice.
