ABSTRACT

Musical tension and excitement would be generated by a combination of the whole band playing riffs, or repeated phrases, and the tenor sax blasting through this background in a solo. Rock 'n' roll's takeover of the pop music industry from the mid-1950s onwards is covered in detail by Dave Rogers in Rock 'n' Roll. The black elements of r and b were merged with white influences like country and western music, and soon there were white idols such as Elvis Presley. A brass and sax section played in call-and-response fashion, like a traditional gospel music chorus, to build up the musical excitement. Charles himself played in some jazz groups, which led to jazz musicians like the saxophonist Cannonball Adderley blending jazz, gospel and blues to give a type of hard-bop 'soul jazz'. Groups like Cream, with Clapton on lead guitar, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, played a loud, amplified form of blues music.
