ABSTRACT
In this chapter, readers will learn about the numbers of women who are incarcerated around the world. I provide a portrait of imprisoned women: their crimes, demographics and life circumstances, and how they fit into a larger structure of the global prison industrial complex. I then outline international standards for the treatment of these women and their children.
