ABSTRACT
At the time of our interview, Alessandra was 41 years old. She was a Black woman who had had experiences with domestic violence, and used drugs to self-medicate after trauma. She had three children: two older children at 14 and 19 years old, but a third was much younger, at five years old. All children were born with positive toxicology for drugs.
