ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the green design strategies that are organized into six major topic areas and most influence schematic design decision-making. Each strategy describes an underlying green principle or concept. Sidebar links suggest related strategies and larger design issues to be considered. The heart of each strategy is a step-by-step design procedure to guide the preliminary sizing of building and system components. Where a strategy is more conceptual than physical, the design procedure provides guidance to help incorporate the concept into schematic design thinking. Conceptual sketches illustrate each strategy to reinforce the fundamentals and photographs show strategies applied to built projects.
