ABSTRACT

This chapter describes recent research on embodiment that can shed light on understanding how such bodily responses can affect people's judgments and actions through multiple psychological processes. It focuses on bodily responses and postures that are particularly relevant in the domain of sport and exercise. The chapter describes examples of how power validates thoughts that are particularly relevant to the domain of sport and exercise psychology, and describes how the same feelings of power can influence evaluation and persuasion through other mechanisms, depending on the circumstances. It introduces the novel idea of different appraisals capable of moderating not only the impact of complex emotions on attitudes, but also the influence of physical objects. This notion has many potential implications to explore in the domain of sport and exercise psychology. Participation in sport and exercise makes people feel physically stronger.
