ABSTRACT

Romanian views regarding agriculture are different from European ones. In Romania, it is considered that this sector should consist mainly from large- and very large-scale farms that would ensure high efficiency. In spite of this view, the reality is that agricultural lands are extremely fragmented. The evolution of the Romanian rural environment was marked by historical events that led to political regime changes and, implicitly, alterations in public policies regarding rural organizations that had a significant impact on peasant culture and the values of villagers. Romania is facing a significant gap in terms of the diversification of the structure of rural economy as compared to the European Union average values. If the impact of the subsidies continues to be limited, small farms cannot benefit from the maximum support of the Common Agricultural Policy, as indicated by the small percentage of Romanian small-farm subsidies compared to those of other European countries.
