ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an outline of our case-based approach to the adoption and development of graph toolkits for urban design research. Our case studies are based around urban community formations in Liverpool, UK, which formed part of an earlier study at University College London (supported by the Leverhulme Trust). We selected Liverpool for this study because the city reflects rapid industrialization and modern restructuring. The spatial patterning stemming from these processes affects its urban community formations to the present. The city region has presented among the UK’s highest spatial inequalities as measured by the Office of National Statistics Index of Multiple Deprivations (ONS, IMD). In this chapter, we take a broad survey of ways in which the road network has impacted on community formations globally, and how this is reflected in spatial patterning. We present a preliminary overview of specific communities in relation to these network structures.
