ABSTRACT

This final chapter highlights the main ideas that were brought to the fore throughout the book. It also moves beyond the book’s content to raise other questions that were less explicit throughout the book and asks serious questions about issues that have not received academic attention commensurate with their importance in the MENA context. Issues such as outbound travel, intra-regional tourism and domestic tourism have not been well researched but need to be. Other pressing issues, especially in times of mass migration, include diaspora tourism and geopolitics. The environmental challenges of MENA are shared with many other regions, but here they manifest in unique ways. Questions are raised about future research needs related to environmental challenges such as water shortages, climate change, and desertification. Finally, the chapter raises speculation on the future of the region’s geopolitical climate and where tourism fits in.
