ABSTRACT

Plants and animals in the same habitat depend on each other for their mutual benefit and survival. Feeding relationships, showing the transfer of energy through the food chain, are one means of exploring this interdependence. This chapter looks at how plants store the Sun’s energy as food and how animals are able to access a share of this energy. We will look at feeding relationships as cycles, as well as chains and webs, recognising the essential role of the decomposers in these cycles.
