ABSTRACT

In the new century, East Asia is a powerhouse of dynamic growth, and the region is playing a crucial role in recovery and development of global economy. Sustainable development in China, Korea, and Japan is improving security and stability in post-Cold War East Asia. The region drawn growing attention since it has showcased the diversity of world civilizations and development patterns as an intersection of interests of major powers. Major countries shifted their focuses toward East Asia and the Pacific with juxtaposition of co-operation and competition among them. First, China's political situation and reform have produced uncertainties and instability. The People's Republic of China (PRC) today has little in common with Cold War China of 1949 to 1979. The East China Sea has become one of the most worrisome flash points in Asia, an important source of insecurity in Western Pacific, and a possible place to involve United States armed forces against the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in East Asia.
