ABSTRACT
This chapter examines some guidance on how the lawyer navigates the complexities while fulfilling the virtue of fidelity to the law. It focuses on particular aspects of fidelity to the law and discusses the most common challenges to doing so. The chapter offers suggestions for overcoming those challenges. It explores the need to internalize a personal commitment to fidelity to the law because external constraints are not enough to ensure that lawyers will conduct themselves as they should. The practical challenges of navigating such situations have resulted in some of the most famous cases in legal ethics. Lawyers may truly believe that justice will occur only if the client prevails. Fidelity to the law includes inherent tensions and complexities, and its origins are diffuse. It arises both from standards that apply only to lawyers and from the general criminal and civil law that binds us all.
