ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings of the qualitative data obtained from the examination of schools' National Education documents, the in-depth, open-ended interviews with the ten purposively sampled interviewees on their perceptions of national identity and National Education and observations of their National Education programmes/activities. The issues, which come out of the interpretation and overall assessment across the cases, will be consolidated as a discussion about cross-case study issues. The aims of teaching plans in National Education are mostly written in a concise and descriptive way. On the goal of learning in National Education, with a closer examination of the aims contained in their National Education teaching plans, most schools aimed at increasing students' knowledge and understanding about China and cultivating their nationalistic feelings towards China. The contents of the observed National Education programmes/activities were mainly knowledge oriented, with emphasis on attaining factual information. And, in some cases, development of conceptual understanding of topics about China.
