ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a commentary on entrepreneurs in China to a series of suggestions on how to work with these entrepreneurs and build a presence in that country. Understanding China, and in particular its specific characteristics and development trajectory, is essential for business success in that country. Although local knowledge is important in all overseas markets, China has its own particular context that is complex, changing and influential. It is distinctive in that it combines the following: rapid economic growth; an entrepreneurial environment where competition is high; a huge domestic market; growing demand from businesses and consumers; national confidence; a strong government; and high levels of sovereign wealth. The foreign businesses that have been successful in China have built businesses based on long-term commitment to the market. They have developed organisational capabilities, networks, and production and distribution facilities that enable this, and that also position the business to take advantage of China's growth.
