ABSTRACT

Immanuel Kant ushered in a new epoch in philosophical thought. His major writings constitute a milestone in the history of philosophy; he is one of those great and profound thinkers who, by their works, but also by their lives, exercised a lasting influence upon the intellectual life of their own time and posterity. No one concerned with philosophy can pass by his theories, he is compelled to come to terms with this 'critic who grinds everything to powder'. Of particular importance is his high valuation of moral duties and the emphasis he places on the dignity of man. The vital essence of his practical philosophy is his advocacy of active morality, loyal, undeviating, selfless devotion to duty and godfearing belief in the good and divine. He established peace between knowledge and faith, assigning to each its own realm. Highly as he valued critical science, he well knew that it cannot explain everything and that faith too has its justification.
