ABSTRACT

Cole Moreton, an award-winning interviewer who writes for the Mail on Sunday, always advises new and inexperienced journalists to keep 'the narrative strand' of a story in their head when they're working. Many journalists begin their careers as news reporters, learning interviewing skills they use throughout their working lives. As a news reporter, one of the first types of interview reporter are likely to do is what are known as 'the calls'. Twitter is a useful source of stories, so follow all the key agencies in journal area – police, fire, ambulance, coastguard, local papers, local TV and radio – and check their Twitter feeds regularly. Accuracy also applies to the names of roads, streets, villages and towns. Unless journalist know for certain how they are spelled, check the spellings letter by letter. Learning to ask the right news questions is fairly straightforward. The key to news interviewing is to have every angle covered.
