ABSTRACT

Traditionally, research on design for sustainability has had a technological focus. With user experience design gaining attention as a research area, design researchers were increasingly exposed to tools and methods to understand user behavior in relation to products and environments. As Design for Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB) as an academic field of interest began to gain momentum, a growing body of researchers consequently explored a broader academic landscape and incorporated insights from a range of fields that had been occupied with understanding attitudes and behaviour that people have towards environment. The principles of behaviour change is a DfSB approach based on insights from behavioural psychology that aims at helping designers to make informed decisions about which design principles to apply when aiming to achieve a desired behaviour change for a target group. Many of those that regard themselves designers for sustainable behavior have put forward ideas of what will be required to bring this field further, and closer to real life.
