ABSTRACT
Places have become plastic or moldable. A forest can become a city, an arid area can become green, the sea can become land, and a valley can become a reservoir or lake. Within the context of normalization in Discipline and Punish, Foucault discusses the origins and development of the modern penal system. Foucault uses the genealogical method fairly and consistently in analyzing sexuality, the birth of the prison, and the clinic. He is interested in how norms have been established and have changed over time, as well as the particular forces that have been instrumental in making those changes. In Discipline and Power Foucault describes the mechanism of discipline in the prison, the school, and the workplace. Foucault's analysis of discipline provides an interesting explanation for why people were enticed to move to cities, to take part in the process of production, to become part of a machine. Vagabonds, nomadism, and undisciplined behavior were systematically rooted out.
