ABSTRACT

Film and television are at the forefront of environmentally sustainable media policy in the UK. They are also currently one of the leading media fields in the Nordic countries in terms of nation branding and visibility where the sector capitalizes on the Nordic Noir brand even as they use huge consumptive processes to produce shows meeting ‘international standards’, often emphasizing a set of cultural values that prioritize nature and sustainability. Thus, it is urgent to assess the industry’s perspectives on environmental sustainability as there are no clear policies in place to curtail emissions. This chapter considers the reasons for this lack of thorough investment in environmental sustainability and suggests some ways to rethink the potentially active role played by a variety of actants in pushing said standards into policy, and ultimately, the ecological habitus of film production.
