ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a description of the iconic voice of Karen Carpenter. For those teachers of a certain age they only have to hear a note or two of her voice to recognise her unique vocal sound. The chapter helps the teacher to think about their journey so far and how episodes in their own development will have profoundly affected how they see and hear their own voice. Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher. The process of learning to teach is an exciting one. It contains challenges of various types – intellectual, practical, physical and emotional. There are number of important introductory points: Firstly, the foundations for Peshkin's subjective 'I's. Secondly, Peshkin categorises his subjective 'I's in two main ways: Intrinsic Subjectivities and Situational Subjectivities. For Peshkin, intrinsic 'I's are the dominant voices within teachers.
