ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the scope and nature of environmental management. It explains the ethical, legal and financial reasons for maintaining and promoting environmental management. The chapter also outlines the importance of sustainability and its relationship with corporate social responsibility. Environmental Supply Chain Management (ESCM) or Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) has been developed in recent years to help organisations address environmental management issues. It is possible for a national government to take legal action against an organisation in the event of environmental pollution occurring. The penalties for environmental offences may include fines, legal costs, cleanup costs, environmental costs and in some cases imprisonment. The multi-disciplinary nature of environmental management requires environmental managers to be able to address a wide range of factors, including quality, safety and health. There have been countless man-made and natural incidents that have caused harm to both humans and the environment. These include nuclear, chemical and oil-based incidents.
