ABSTRACT

Pollution from a workplace/chemical site can be wide ranging: affecting human and animal health and damaging plants; damage to the environment (acid rain); general nuisance (from odour, noise, etc.); substances released by 'fallout' causing pollution, land contamination and water pollution; and pollution may cause damage to property. Incidents that cause pollution can be very minor, ranging from an oil spill from a work vehicle onto a grass verge to a major chemical release, such as at Seveso, Italy. Regardless of the size of the workplace/site, a company has legal, moral and economic reasons not to cause pollution. Many organisations have implemented an Environmental Management System (14001). Within the current management system under Implementation and Operation, there is a requirement to plan for an emergency. Various organisations may need to have access to site plans in the event of an emergency, such as emergency services, environmental regulators and the health and safety regulators.
