ABSTRACT

This chapter consolidates the progress made by the school, and research-based discoveries on how to push the deeply sedimented institution of formal education towards the century they live in. It describes what they learned from their school–university research program to forge new ways of teaching and learning for the digitally-mediated, globally connected realities of the 21st century. The political foundations and statutes of a nation are established over time, and can be slow moving to accommodate social change. Canada is socially and culturally parsed in constitutional documents that no longer adequately speak to the demography of Toronto—and other cities in the country, large and small. Joyce Public School succeeded in creating a culture of innovation and academic success. This can be tangibly demonstrated by the outstanding successes experienced by the children, teachers and parents in the school.
