ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the principle of Aparigraha as it relates to the apparently contrasting principles of profit and the generation of wealth. Aparigraha cannot be understood in isolation from wider Jain ethics and wisdom as it is an integral part of it. The essence of Aparigraha is holistic it integrates the person to wider community, society and the planet. When businesses truly practice Aparigraha, the outcomes we would observe are: Just as the Jains understand fully that money is a means to an end, and not an end in itself, business is also seen in this light. From the above, we can see that the concept of Aparigraha offers an alternative ethic for business and finance, with many fascinating dimensions. Aparigraha emphasises self-discipline, and a wider understanding of the impact of personal values and actions on the organisation and its social and natural environment.
