ABSTRACT

In some of the more primitive Australian aborigine tribes, the tribal witch-doctors would expel undesirables by pointing a bone at them. They were then expected to wander off into the surrounding desert and die. Tokyo, with its recent moves to drive out progressive TV commentators from the airwaves, seems to be moving in the same direction. The witch-doctors – the commentators of the Right – are busy with their attacks on them. Now marked with the stigma of rightist disapproval, these progressives have been silenced, left to spend what could be years wandering in the political wilderness. I relate later my own similar experience with the Japanese media.
