ABSTRACT

Okinawa was under U.S. administration from 1945 until 1972. Despite reversion to Japanese administration in 1972, Okinawans remain ambivalent about their role as a garrison island still hosting most of the U.S. military bases. 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender, prompting debate among Okinawans about the legacies of war and their role as pawns in the U.S.-Japan alliance.
