ABSTRACT

In this chapter you will read about the origins of the cognitive-behavioural therapeutic approach, its theory and modern-day development. The theory will be applied to practice with the provision of case examples and you will be given the opportunity to practice the main components of this approach. Furthermore, the evolution of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) into ‘third-wave’ CBT approaches will be discussed. Holding more than one therapeutic approach in mind and having a working knowledge of them is of the essence in the professional identity and work of a counselling psychologist; therefore the aim of this chapter is to introduce you to CBT as another applied approach in the toolkit you would have as a counselling psychologist.
