ABSTRACT

A study conducted by the authors and other recent research demonstrate the positive relationship between having trust in your manager and being engaged. Trust in your manager promotes psychological safety and is foundational to effective performance management. The chapter provides and overview of trust and explains its key drivers. It offers specific behavioral recommendations to managers for building a climate of trust, and tools for building both trust and empowerment action plans. The chapter closes with a detailed discussion of how to evaluate and actively manage the climate of trust, and provides a sample survey managers can use to assess the climate of trust and empowerment in their organizations. The goal is to enable managers to do what they can to ensure a fair and equitable performance management process.
