ABSTRACT

Employees will likely be more engaged when they have opportunities for training and support from their managers for their career development efforts according to a study conducted by the authors. The chapter addresses both employee and team learning and development. The chapter emphasizes the need for managers to focus on and help their employees engage in self-development. Three frames of references are provided for considering the extent to which employees are self-developers: what it takes to be a continuous learner, the extent of the employee’s career motivation, and the degree to which the employee possess an expansive personality. Creating opportunities for informal learning and coaching employees how to reflect on experience are highlighted as important strategies. Managers are encouraged, as well, to focus on team learning and development. Adaptive, generative, and transformative team learning are defined and ways managers can facilitate each of those types of learning are explored. Managing learning in multiteam systems is also addressed.
