ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of how writing (in any language) works and specific applications for writing in a second language. It also outlines the different groups of L2 writers and how varying linguistic/cultural/educational backgrounds can influence L2 writing and writing instruction. The chapter concludes with a summary of implications for curriculum and instruction, which are then built upon in Chapters 6–7.
