ABSTRACT

The problems and limitations generated by neoliberal globalization received a wide array of responses from different social segments all over the world. The structural problems of the global economy have been addressed by these social segments in a diverse yet unstructured manner. These responses include practical transformations, organizational innovations, strategic reconfigurations – whether in the form of increasing diversity or new sorts of alliances – and changes in the mode of thinking regarding social and economic organization. The task of this chapter is to review the defining elements of solidarity economies that emerge as a response to neoliberal globalization and to use a comparative analysis to construct a framework of action and evaluation that may lead to further avenues of inquiry. It will also focus on the practical transformations and the material basis of solidarity economies and the ways in which we can think about these challenges analytically.
