ABSTRACT

Economists do not recognize that the concern for the poor, for inequality, laudable though it remains, cannot be corrected by single environmental regulatory remedies, not without returning to the necessary basis, that is, ecological integrity, as Pope Francis clearly recognizes. Every part of the 'material universe' working together indicates a common functioning, even if we prefer to avoid the religious implications of Francis's own 'common purpose'. The 'Principle of the Common Good' entails fostering intergenerational justice, as well as defending cultural ecology, that are preserving cultures, especially indigenous cultures and their cultural traditions. This chapter summarizes the present situation primarily in North America, and in the US. The civil rights movement is a shining example of citizens' involvement, civic virtues, and the fight for justice, as such; it is clearly an encouraging precedent for those who believe in "earth democracy" and the renewed ethical commitment to ecological global governance.
