ABSTRACT

A key intention of the programme is to enable participants to recognise the mode of mind they are in, and to be able to intentionally shift from one mode to another. This happens in a moment - the ability to wake up and step out of doing mode while in the midst of daily life can take the form of a momentary sense of awareness of the sensations of the feet on the floor or of the breath. However, each Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) session implicitly emphasises a different aspect of the doing and being modes. Mindfulness meditation is a methodology which supports the cultivation of being mode. The formal practices offer a training arena within which these skills can be explored and cultivated, and then generalised to everyday life. There are two aspects to formal mindfulness meditation - calming or concentration practices and insight practices.
