ABSTRACT

It is generally argued that by increasing the level of education of employees in the tourism industry, a development process can be triggered, especially in Africa where this industry presents many opportunities. This chapter theoretically investigates the possibility of enhancing economic performance of African countries by promoting tourism sector. It proposes a model that assumes monopolistic competition, and uses it to show the influence of relative prices of rearing and educating children on a household’s decision to have children. Additionally, within the caveats of this model, the chapter presents implication of land use policy.
