ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the case study format and method used to identify and compose the nine projects featured in Chapter 30. It also introduces the SEED Evaluator as a valuable tool for guiding public interest design project development in educational settings. In the case studies, the SEED Evaluator helps define the lexicon for reporting pedagogical practices, engaged learning processes, and project outputs. Subsequently case studies are presented through a consistent framework that allows for comparison of approach between and among those featured. Select teaching strategies and project-specific learning objectives, for example, are essential contributions to each project. Evidence of project instruction provides insights on project-based research and engaged learning. In addition to the content described earlier, each case study considers the primary social, economic, and environmental issues addressed; the community-based challenge; pedagogical goals; project results; and learning outcomes.
