ABSTRACT

Imagine these to be the introductory words of a participant attending your training (unfortunately they were voiced at the start of one of our training sessions!). Even though Dewey (1938) states that the most important attitude that can be formed is a desire to learn, not all training participants are actually motivated to learn, and this can impact on the sessions you deliver and what participants ‘take away’ from the training. In this Snapshot we briefly consider the factors that serve as barriers to motivation in adult learners, highlighting practical ways to help participants to want to learn during your training.
