ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, Thinking Geography—A Brief History, is divided into three sections beginning with Earth—Calculations, detailing early recordings of geography, which include Immanuel Kant’s lectures on the subject ‘Physical Geography’ (Physische Geographie) at the University of Königsberg in 1756-96. Herculean—Scapes looks at early examples of humans shaping the ground and creating structures that respond to geography at sites such as the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon at Teotihuacan, located outside Mexico City, and the Derinkuyu underground city in Turkey’s Nevşehir Province. Domains—City’s History, Geography’s Terrain references Mumford’s seminal work The City in History and how The City in Geography can be thought of as a continuance of his project through a focus on the city and physical geography.
