ABSTRACT

Chapter 4, The Fall of Geography—The Fate of Ground, explores the demise of geography as an omnipotent, physical entity for human survival. Flattening—Surfaces and Topographies considers the human desire to flatten the ground for the sake of ease of movement and comfort. Mapping—Plots and Charts reviews how terrain has been measured and how cartography became an important tool in claiming ownership over geographical regions. Bypassing—Highways and Byways reviews the infrastructural ribbons of highways and freeways that produce the geography in terms of linear speed.
