ABSTRACT

The whole purpose of this text has been to engage you with the study of aging and diversity through active participation in the learning process. Drawing on theory, research, and practice, we have presented what is important and useful in making a difference in the lives of older adults from diverse ethnic and cultural groups. Throughout the text we have tried to maximize your responsibility for your own learning and have encouraged you to obtain hands-on experience using your newly acquired knowledge, your powers of observation, and your interpersonal skills. We have provided learning experiences that involve discussion with peers and opportunities for mutual support and interaction. Our aim throughout has been to provide you with opportunities for elaboration—putting material into your own words—as well as a chance to begin interpreting the observations in light of research we have presented. We have also invited you to share your responses to the questions from the exercises interspersed throughout the text.
