ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the multiple and interrelated factors concerning touch that impacts on the therapeutic encounter with children in therapy sessions. Children's religious family background will also influence a child's experience of touch. Some religious practices indicate norms regarding acceptable or unacceptable touch in relationships. Touch is essential to children's healthy development and the intricacies of touch between practitioners and children in counseling and play therapy, and for other professionals who work with children, are complex. The book explores in detail the risk management and ethical considerations of touch in clinical practice. It aims to increase professional awareness for practitioners about touch and to enhance clinical knowledge and skills to ethically, sensitively, and appropriately deal with the varied mediating factors that impact on touch within therapy sessions with children.
