ABSTRACT

Theraplay® is a structured form of play therapy that models responsive, positive, and playful interaction that occurs naturally between parent and child. In this chapter, characteristics of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are first described, followed by a discussion on Theraplay® as a play therapy model in addressing the needs of children who have ADHD. Ethical considerations in the use of touch when using Theraplay® are also discussed. ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. Evidence-based psychosocial approaches for treating ADHD children at school included behavioral intervention and cognitive behavior therapy. Touch is an essential part of Theraplay® treatment. The overall purpose of touch in Theraplay® is to address the developmental needs of children, that is, to touch carefully and respectfully. Theraplay® is an attachment-based play therapy model, with an emphasis on the use of touch. It can help children connect to others, develop self-regulation, and learn adaptive coping skills.
