ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study about Vicente, who was diagnosed as dyslexic when he was in first grade at the age of 6. Even though Vicente repeated second grade, his problems with reading and writing persisted. The diagnosis of dyslexia was confirmed when he was in fourth grade. Vicente showed the first signs of reading difficulties during kindergarten when he was attending a private school. He had trouble recognizing colors, objects and letters. Vicente lives with his parents and two siblings in an upper-middle-class neighbourhood in Santiago. Vicente explained that he sometimes feels frustrated because of his reading difficulties. However, he has developed some very beneficial strategies to deal with his problems and frustrations. According to Vicente's learning style, the most successful strategy for him is to combine different routes of information access. Vicente has strong opinions about learning difficulties and teaching opportunities. He said, "People can fail, machines cannot; we are people, not perfect machines".
