ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of an Australian Adolescent with Dyslexia. Gwyn is a delightful and well-spoken adolescent who was diagnosed as dyslexic when he was 8 years old. Now he is a young man who is challenged by some aspects of his dyslexia, although he reads frequently and enjoys it very much. The psychologist's report detailed Gwyn's history of dyslexia and dysgraphia, which showed continued weakness in spelling and word-level reading skills, but also excellent comprehension skills when compared to grade level peers. Gwyn rated his reading skills as 2.5 out of 5, while at the time of the current interview he rated them as 4, revealing a more positive assessment of his reading performance. Gwyn reported that he did not enjoy reading aloud in class, although he enjoyed reading silently. When he had to read aloud he tried to read slowly in order to minimize mistakes.
