ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the idea of critical moments in field research within communities. It foregrounds the issues discussed in the narratives and discusses the challenges for academics of switching from the impersonal to the personal voice. The chapter then draws out five common strands running through the narratives and ends with a brief description of the overall structure of the volume.
