ABSTRACT
In this chapter I share my experiences of working on the intergenerational language and cultural maintenance of the Hoisan-wa language in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due to the higher status of other Chinese languages, Hoisan-wa heritage speakers are often subsumed within larger, pan-Chinese communities, rendering them voiceless. I detail how my research benefitted from my insider status and from family support in my research endeavours. My lessons focus on the importance of establishing inclusive spaces and contexts for linguistically marginalised communities.
