ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the evolving dynamics of the relationship between India and China, paying particular attention to the drivers of this relationship, and addressing whether and how the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping is making a difference to the overall state of affairs. It examines India's assessment of China's India policy under Xi. India has demonstrated its inclination to undertake a more determined stand on many of the critical issues impinging on the Asian strategic balance and maritime security. The chapter discusses the evolving military and power dynamics between India and China, it appears that the border issue will continue to remain a sticking point in bilateral relations. China's relationship with Pakistan is another important factor that has continued to affect India–China relations. There are a number of factors that negatively impact on the relationship, the one major positive driver has been the booming bilateral trade ties.
