ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce existing theories associated with cancer and palliative care. A systematic review of the existing theories in cancer and palliative care provides guidance to practitioners and contributes to improving care within these contexts. Specific theories addressing the experience of being diagnosed with cancer are rare. Existing theories include: Roy’s Adaptation model (Roy, 2009), Symptom Management (Dodd et al., 2001; Humphreys et al., 2008), the Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (Lenz et al., 1997; Lenz et al., 1995); and the Theory of Uncertainty in Illness (Mishel, 1988; Mishel and Clayton, 2003; Mishel and Clayton, 2008). These theories were developed from research amongst patient groups diagnosed with cancer and address healthcare. Theory-based recommendations for the improvement of current cancer and palliative care are proposed.
