ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines empirical research addressing the question of whether the multiplayer features of video games are positively related to short- and long-term game success. Specifically, this research assesses the impact of local and online multiplayer features. As such, it was predicted that: The presence of a game's local multiplayer feature correlates positively with its short-term and total sales. In contrast to local multiplayer, online multiplayer features can make use of direct network effects, such that the value of these games increases with a larger installed base. As shows, games with the online multiplayer feature were more successful for older console generations. Therefore, video game developers should be advised to focus on video games with online multiplayer features in later stages of a console lifecycle. Video games for consoles are a mass media phenomenon, accompanied by a growing number of exciting questions and possible strategies for managers.
