ABSTRACT

I. Marx’s Reaction to Hegel Karl Marx says that the idea of civil society is a misunderstanding sowed by capitalists to maintain their economic advantage. In our age, in which large and growing economic inequality between the top and the rest of the society is a matter of common concern in our politics, we can ask, is Marx correct? To address this question, we have added a comparison of Adam SmithÊs views, discussed in Chapter 1, and MarxÊs likely response to what Smith might say to him. Now, we turn to Marx.
